Laden schooner (Dsc03494)

According to my tour guide: the wooden ships are made by the Bugis (master woodworkers and shipbuilders) and carry lumber from Borneo. The sea journey takes about 3 to 4 days. The lumber is manually unloaded (no cranes!) at Sunda Kelapa Harbour docks while cement bound for Sumatra is loaded on later. Later, small trucks haul the lumber out of the port. After Sumatra, the ships make their way back to Borneo for more lumber. Each ship is manned by about 10 crew and is powered by both motor and sail.
