Glodok (Chinatown): the amount of effluence at the river mouth is appalling and tends to choke off the opening to the sea (centre of photo). Flooding in Chinatown is quite common during the rainy season. Not far from here, on one side of the river, is the construction of many luxury shopping centres and apartments. The building works raised the road level on its side of the river and, as a result, Chinatown on the other side of the river is even more prone to severe flooding than before.
